DHS has finalized a rule ending the long-standing duration of the status system for most F-1 students and J-1 exchange visitors. Beginning September 15, 2026, most students will be admitted for the length of their program, up to a maximum of four years. Those needing additional time must apply for an extension. Universities warn the change could increase costs and create challenges for longer academic programs.
