The M1 visa is a specialized non-immigrant visa category designed specifically for international students pursuing vocational or non-academic studies in the United States. Unlike its counterpart, the F1 visa (which is for academic studies), the M1 visa focuses on practical, career-oriented training programs that typically lead to specific professional certifications or technical expertise.

Glance: One cannot apply for an M1 visa solely for English language study. M1 visa holders are typically allowed to stay in the U.S. for a maximum of three years. Extensions may be possible for educational or medical reasons.
After successfully completing your M-1 studies, you can be approved for a period of paid (or unpaid) practical training, up to six months. USCIS calculates the number of months based on how long you have been studying: You will get one month of work permission for every four months of full-time study. The validity of your visa depends on how long your vocational education takes. You might be given a visa for the total duration of your studies, or for a shorter time. However, your Form I-20 is only valid for one year. This means you will have to get a new one each year. The M1 visa and the Form I-20 can be extended for a maximum of 3 years.
